Our Story

A legacy built over four generations. A firm shaped by Mexico's most consequential legal, diplomatic, and commercial history.

Founded · 1943

A Firm With Deep Roots

IBG Legal was founded in Cancún in 2005, at the precise moment the Mexican Caribbean began its transformation into an institutional investment destination. Behind the firm is a family lineage that spans centuries of legal and political history. David Lawrence Gregg was the United States Commissioner who negotiated the annexation treaty of the Kingdom of Hawaii with King Kamehameha III in 1854. A branch of the family is connected to Ignacio Allende, a central figure of Mexican independence. Another traces back to a Catalan ancestor who stood against oppressive regimes in Europe before crossing the Atlantic. In Mexico City, Juan F. Gregg practiced labor law in the Historic Center and Patricia Gregg built a practice in bioethics and regulatory law, moving through Roma Norte, Las Lomas de Chapultepec, and Bosques de las Lomas. IBG Legal did not arrive in Cancún to improvise. It arrived with generations of accumulated family practice and the clarity of knowing exactly where it comes from.

The Mexican Caribbean · A New Frontier

Building the Legal Infrastructure of the Riviera Maya

When Cancún began attracting international capital in the 1980s, the Gregg family lawyers were already working the Mexican market. IBG Legal arrived in Quintana Roo in 2005 and has since structured fideicomisos in the restricted zone, regularized ejidal land that became hotel developments, litigated the first coastal environmental disputes, and built the foreign investment structures that opened the Mexican Caribbean to institutional markets. That transactional record, built deal by deal and case by case, is what distinguishes IBG Legal from any firm that arrived afterward.

Today · Precision at Scale

Where Law Meets Investment

IBG Legal operates today at the intersection of high-stakes real estate transactions, complex litigation, and international investment, with offices in Quintana Roo, Mexico City, and Querétaro. The firm combines modern research methodology and technology-assisted due diligence with the territorial knowledge and institutional relationships that only generations of continuous practice can build. The same firm that structured your acquisition can defend it in litigation: a critical advantage that very few firms in Mexico can credibly offer.

Conservation · Beyond the Practice of Law

Committed to the Caribbean Ecosystem

IBG Legal's commitment to Mexico's Caribbean coast extends beyond the courtroom. The firm actively collaborates with Saving Our Sharks Foundation on marine conservation initiatives in the Caribbean, linking its environmental law practice to the preservation of the ecosystem that underpins the region's economy, the same coast on which its clients invest and its lawyers live. This is not performative philanthropy: it is consistency between the environmental law we practice and the territory we protect. Learn more at savingoursharksfoundation.org

Why IBG Legal

What Distinguishes Us in the Market

Mexico's Caribbean real estate market has a complexity that very few firms understand in depth. Our advantage is not size — it is a family lineage of lawyers with over eighty years of history.

Discuss a Matter
01

Twenty Years in the Caribbean. Over Eighty of Family History.

IBG Legal arrived in Cancún in 2005 and has been present through every cycle of the Mexican Caribbean real estate market since. Behind the firm is a family lineage of lawyers with roots going back to 1943. That combination of history and territorial presence is what allows us to see risks that other firms miss.

02

Territorial Knowledge That Cannot Be Improvised

We know the Public Registry of Quintana Roo, the municipal authorities of Tulum, Cozumel, Solidaridad, and Benito Juárez, the judicial precedents of the 15th Circuit, and the market dynamics that can only be acquired through decades of permanent presence in the territory.

03

Partner-Level Attention on Every Matter

We are a boutique by choice. Every client has direct access to the partner making decisions on their file. There are no intermediary layers between the problem and the solution — a critical distinction when what is at stake is a high-value transaction or an active dispute.

04

Trilingual Service — English, Spanish & French

The American, Canadian, or European buyer investing in Tulum or Cozumel needs to understand exactly what they are acquiring and what risks are real. We operate in English, Spanish, and French without language becoming a barrier to the quality of the legal analysis.

05

Litigation and Transactional Practice, Integrated

The same firm that structures the deal can defend it. When the litigator is part of the transactional team from the outset, contracts are more resilient, contingencies are anticipated, and the cost of conflict is significantly reduced.
